Cleaning your asphalt or fiberglass roof

Years ago we never saw asphalt and fiberglass roofs streaked and stained like we do today. A couple of things have changed. One, roofs today use limestone in the manufacturing process. Second, an algae called gloecapsa magma has moved from the southern states of the U.S. to the northern states.

Limestone is a natural fertilizer for this particular type of algae. Thus, your roof is a natural breeding ground for gloecapsa magma. It was easy for the algae to move north since there was such an abundant food source. Algae is typically green. However, gloecapsa magma grows a dark protective layer to protect itself from the sun. Similarly, the reason you see the black streaks and stains of gloecapsa magma on the north side of roofs and under shady areas is because strong southern exposure sunlight makes it difficult to grow. However, once it has taken hold on the north side of your roof, it will quickly spread to other areas of your roof.

Asphalt roof cleaning is important to keeping your home beautiful. Your roof typically makes up 40% of what people see when they look at your home. Many people mistakenly replace their roof years before it is worn out due to streaking. Simply cleaning your asphalt roof will make it look new again thereby extending the life of your roof.

Once algae has infected your roof, moss will follow. Moss is dangerous to your roof because it actually grows roots into the granules causing them to loosen and fall off. After algae has begun to appear and spread, moss will follow. Removing algae from your roof’s surface is the best and the safest precautionary measure you can take in stopping future moss damage and ensuring the longevity of your asphalt or fiberglass roof.
